Appreciating the Art of Tea

Did you know, the history of Chinese Tea dates back to over 5,000 years ago? Its rich heritage and culture piqued the interest of 24 SUSS students who attended the Chinese Tea workshop at the Tea Chapter teahouse on Jan 18. They took this opportunity to appreciate Chinese Tea Art and to celebrate Chinese New Year.

Grand Tea Master, Patrick Kang, was the trainer of the workshop. With over 20 years of experience in Chinese Tea Art and Chinese culture under his belt, he has since conducted workshops for Singapore’s Former President, Tony Tan and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

The first half of the workshop saw Master Kang formally introducing Chinese Tea to the participants. He shared his knowledge on the origins of Tea, classifications of Tea and the benefits of Tea drinking. Even though the student participants range from younger to older age groups, they were equally intrigued by the history and their new knowledge on Chinese tea.

Before allowing the students to proceed with their tea brewing session, Master Kang demonstrated step-by-step, on the way to go about brewing and appreciating Chinese Tea. One lucky student had a chance to drink the tea which he brewed! Everyone was very impressed by the mini-performance from Master Kang.

Finally, all the students were asked to proceed with their tea brewing session. We were glad to see participants from different races coming together to bond and chat over a cup of good tea!
