Synopsis

This is an introductory course on the development of social work practice and social services in Singapore. The course begins by situating the development of social work in Singapore within the broader historical context of how social work became a profession in other countries. The development of social work in Singapore is also shaped by the country’s historical, political, social and economic contexts. The principles, values and key social theories underpinning social work practice will be discussed. Students will also gain an understanding of how social services are developed in Singapore and discuss contemporary issues on services for children, families and the elderly. In particular, the role of social workers in the development of social services will be explored.
