The summer of 2019 saw a division within Chinese communities worldwide due to the Hong Kong protest movement. On 5 Oct 2019, Mr Yau Lop Poon, Editor-in-Chief of Yazhou Zhoukan which is headquartered in Hong Kong, delivered a talk titled “Top Challenges Facing Today’s Global Chinese Communities” in Singapore to share his first-hand experience.

The annual public lecture, co-organised by the Centre for Chinese Studies@SUSS(CCS) and Lianhe Zaobao, was originally scheduled to be held at the SPH Auditorium. However, response was so overwhelming that the organisers decided, a week before the event, to change the venue to the Singapore Conference Hall in order to accommodate over 800 individuals who registered for the talk.

In his opening remarks, A/P Foo Tee Tuan, Director of CCS, highlighted two key reasons for the event’s high attendance rate. First, Mr Yau Lop Poon is a famous and authoritative public intellectual in the Chinese-speaking world, and second, his talk focused on a key trending topic highly relevant to the region, and globally.

Mr Yau talked at length about how China had transformed over the past few decades, and how Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the world reacted and adapted to these changes. He opined that the unrest in Hong Kong demonstrated the clash of development models of China and the West. While highlighting the ideological infighting within Taiwan and Hong Kong, he also urged Chinese communities in Southeast Asia to be more creative to develop their own brand of Chinese culture.

After the speech, Ms Han Yong Hong, Associate Editor of Lianhe Zaobao cum Editor of Zaobao.com, joined Mr Yau to wrap up the talk and answer questions from the audience.
