Keeping up with Translation Today

Our students and faculty from the Translation and Malay programmes were in for a treat when they met Professor Anthony Pym, a distinguished Professor at Rovira I Virgili University in Spain, Professor of Translation Studies at the University of Melbourne and former President of the European Society for Translation Studies, who delved into the latest trends and growth in this field.

Apart from bringing laughter and wisdom to the conversation, Professor Anthony Pym urged a rethinking of the public image of translators among the participants. In this era of translation automation, he emphasised the importance of integrating artificial intelligence and machine translation into their daily work or studies. The roundtable discussion was lively, with experience and challenges shared by students and faculty in teaching, language services and public communication.

Despite owning a remarkable portfolio of 28 books and more than 200 translation and intercultural communication articles under his belt, Professor Anthony Pym generously offered his rich insights and advice, and humbly concluded the session that, “I’m sure I learnt more than anyone else”.
