SUSS Students Made their Mark at the L'Oréal BrandStorm Finals 2023

Celebration time – the team with SUSS supporters!

Congratulations to Leanne, Kelyn, and Joe Hui, our outstanding students from the Bachelor of Science in Marketing degree from SUSS School of Business! We are thrilled to celebrate their well-deserved success as they have won the joint 3rd runner-up award in the highly competitive L'Oréal Brandstorm National finals! Their exceptional skills and dedication have earned them this remarkable achievement, and we are incredibly proud of their accomplishments.

Their business idea, Glamify – “beauty on the go”, leverages AI and facial recognition technology that is built into the handphone app to capture and recommend the most appropriate make-up style to users. With this, users can proceed to a Glamify booth (located at universities and high-traffic areas) equipped with a “robotic stylist” to have their make-up done. Their solution involves utilising a comprehensive range of beauty products from L'Oréal to enhance customers' appearances and help them achieve their best looks. With these, L'Oréal will be able to provide beauty tips to users and generate stronger interest towards their products. This innovative concept, which seamlessly integrated AI, AR, and marketing strategies, propelled them to become one of the six finalists out of 140 teams from diverse universities!

After being announced as one of the National Finalists, the team was invited to a prestigious two-day session at L'Oréal's office. During this time, they had the opportunity to receive valuable insights and guidance from seasoned professionals who were already working at L'Oréal. The coaching sessions proved to be immensely beneficial, helping the team refine their ideas.

In addition to the guidance from L'Oréal professionals, the team also gained knowledge about cutting-edge technologies such as AI, AR, and the metaverse through a fireside chat with Meta. This opportunity allowed them to stay updated with the latest industry trends and innovations, providing them with a competitive edge in their project.

The mentorship sessions and conversations with fellow competitors were also incredibly valuable for the team. Collaborating with other talented individuals in the competition provided fresh perspectives and new ideas, helping the team further refine their concepts and strategies. Additionally, they learned to deal with conflicting opinions and ideas and gained a better understanding of how to present themselves during a pitch.

All smiles – all ready to impress the judges!

The team impressed the judges with their ideas

On the day of the Finals competition, Leanne, Kelyn, and Joe Hui were thrilled to have the opportunity to pitch their innovative ideas to a distinguished panel of judges comprising prominent industry figures. This added a heightened level of excitement and reward to their experience. Overall, the team felt that the L'Oréal Brandstorm was an insightful and eye-opening experience.

“The competition challenged us to come up with innovative and bold ideas that leveraged technologies like AI, AR, and metaverse. It was a daunting task, but we were up for it. We brainstormed, collaborated, and worked tirelessly to bring our ideas to life,” Kelyn said as she recounted her amazing competition journey. “We faced challenges along the way, and at one point, felt lost about the direction of our ideas. But with the guidance and sharing from the fireside chat, we managed to change and tweak our ideas into a more realistic concept. It was an amazing feeling to see our ideas take shape and evolve into something that we were proud of. Nevertheless, I'm incredibly proud of what we've accomplished together, and I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to work alongside such capable and supportive individuals.”

Leanne reflects, “The skills I honed during this experience will serve me well in my future endeavours, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have developed them. All in all, participating in the L'Oréal Brandstorm case competition was a fulfilling and enriching experience that I will always cherish.”

Joe Hui also shares her thoughts, "With so many talented participants, the journey was undoubtedly a challenging one, but we are immensely grateful to everyone who made it possible. The knowledge and expertise that we gained from these sessions were truly eye-opening.”

With this, Leanne, Kelyn and Joe Hui have secured internship opportunities with one of the world’s leading brands in the beauty industry. Well done girls!
