BSE521 Risk Management and Legal Aspects in Outdoor Education introduces students to the various concepts and approaches in risk management, and the closely linked legal aspects that are important to organisations conducting outdoor adventure activities. Students will be exposed to various models and approaches to risk management – from the traditional view of managing physical risks to the more updated ‘whole-of-organisation’ approach of managing risks in various areas of the organisation. Legal aspects in outdoor education not only identify an area of risk to be managed but also provides greater clarity of the risk management standard expected of outdoor education service providers by stakeholders. Students will be introduced to fundamental legal terminology, legal procedures, liability limiting agreements, defences against negligence, among others, during the seminars. While being cognizant of the legal context in which outdoor adventure activities operate, the ability to execute the risk management process for the whole-of-organisation level and translate it to specific programme level enables the organisation to be more sustainable.
