Q: What is Work-Study Degree (WSDeg)?
A: The SUSS Work-Study Degree (WSDeg) programme provides students with a holistic and immersive learning experience that combines theoretical knowledge with practical skills. Through a carefully designed curriculum, students are given the opportunity to acquire deep technical and work-relevant skills that are essential for their future careers.
Students will earn academic credit units (CUs) that will contribute to fulfilling the degree requirements. Ultimately, this program aims to produce graduates who are job-ready and can make a meaningful contribution to their respective industries.
The programme structure consists of a min. 12 month On-the-Job Training (OJT) in their field of study and an Industry Applied Project (IAP).
Q: When do students do their Work-Study Degree (WSDeg) OJT?
A: Students typically commence Work-Study Degree OJT from their second year of studies.
Q: Does host organisation need to purchase insurance for students on WSDeg OJT?
A: Students are covered by SUSS's existing insurance scheme (see Student Insurance Scheme). The host organisation may provide further coverage for the student if required during the WSDeg OJT period.
Q: Can students perform a shorter WSDeg OJT with us?
A: No. Students must do a minimum of 12 months. However, the OJT can be split into 2 x 6 months if employer opts for a term-in-term-out WSDeg mode.
Q: Can students perform a longer WSDeg with us?
A: Yes. Students have the option to do a longer WSDeg OJT period if it does not affect their school curriculum.
Q: What is the difference between WSDeg and Work Attachment (WA)?
A: WSDeg is credit bearing and WA does not fulfil any academic credits. WSDeg is for a minimum of 12 months and WA is for a minimum of 24 weeks. For WSDeg there is a requirement to complete an IAP during the OJT period. There is no IAP requirement for WA.
Q: Is there a standard remuneration for students?
A: We leave this up to the company's discretion, following the competitive market practice. However, as a guide, due to the longer duration of 12 months, we recommend the stipend for WSDeg to be pegged at 1.5 times of normal work attachment stipend.
Q: Are there any requirements that employers must meet to participate in SUSS's WSDeg programme?
A: Employers are selected based on their ability to provide a 12 months On-the-Job Training (OJT) which meet the WA Learning Objectives (LO) required for the various Majors (see "Useful Documents" above) and offer an Industry Applied Project (IAP) for the intern to work on during the OJT period.
Career Development may schedule a brief telephone conversation or brief meeting to assess employer's requirements, as well as to share with employer the requirements for WSDeg and IAP.
Employers who are motivated solely by revenue will not be considered. We are seeking partnerships with Industry Partners who are keen to collaborate with SUSS to provide Students with a meaningful learning journey which would create a win-win situation for both employer and students.
Q: What is IAP?
A: In consultation with employer's supervisor, the student intern will carry out a project that involves proposing or enacting innovative solutions of an identified need in the employer.
Possible types of projects include (but not limited to) the following: Analyse a current situation and identify a problem statement, carry out research in relevant field and recommend a proposed solution or research on new and future trends and innovation in the industry and present the research, its relevance to employer opportunities and challenges.
Q: What is the assessment for IAP?
A: IAP is assessed on: Quality of work, Impact on organisation or industry, Demonstration of learning and growth, and Originality of work.
