SUSS students/alumni Tan Wen Lin (C2020 FTACC) and Wong Pheng Xiang (C2023 PTBSBA) participated in the ASEAN Data Science Explorers Competition 2024 and were awarded third place in this regional competition!
The students’ passion for data science led them to the ASEAN Data Science Explorers competition which they took as an opportunity to contribute to the ASEAN Sustainable Development Goals, specifically in Climate Action and Zero Hunger.
In reflection of their journey, one of the obstacles they faced was the availability of data quality across the region. This mandated them to think creatively in sourcing information and developing methods to bridge any gaps, ensuring that the analysis remains robust and actionable.
During the competition period, both students were balancing the demands of their internships and academic responsibilities alongside meeting competition deliverables. This required the students to be exceptionally efficient in our research and solution development. The experience developed sharper time management skills as well as the ability to work under pressure, to ensure that they were able to deliver high-quality results despite the constraints.
Wen Lin and Pheng Xiang strongly encourage aspiring data enthusiasts to participate in this competition to gain hands-on experience and contribute to the development of ASEAN.
