This Minor in Introduction to ASEAN China India (ACI), launched in the July 2023 semester, supports students’ understanding and professional readiness within the ACI region, for possibilities of starting careers, expanding businesses or contributing to socio-economic developments.
The programme includes:
Immersive Stage
Engaging in an overseas work attachment (OWA) in the ACI region ranging between 8 weeks to 24 weeks combined with other overseas experience platforms such as Impact Start Up Challenge, Industry Based Study Programme (Overseas) that focus on the development of professional readiness in the region. Note : OWA can be accounted as part of full-time undergraduate work attachment graduation requirement. See details here.
Thematic Stage
Taking 15cu of thematic stage courses where students are introduced to the general understanding of the region, an appreciation of a language within the region and an exposure to other issues or languages related to ACI which allows for students to make connections between courses, identify the uniqueness of each context or synthesise new understandings based on comparisons of each course. Students are recommended to take the thematic stage courses based on the following list (tagged to table 1 below) of courses that corresponds to the country visited for the Immersive Stage.

Recommended thematic courses
All students will take OGP 103 Introduction to ASEAN to fulfill the 15 CU of the Thematic Stage. Students are recommended to fulfill their 10 CU of courses in the Thematic Stage based on the following list of courses that corresponds to the country visited for the Immersive Stage.

Admission Criteria and Procedures- Contact your career mentor for an Overseas Work Attachment (OWA) opportunity by emailing the Career Development Office at [email protected]. You may approach Dr. Patrick Tan or Ms. Jessica Xue from the office on regional opportunities and advice.
- Upon securing an Overseas Work Attachment placement with the career development office, you will be able to access Minor in Introduction to ACI (MNACI) during minor declaration exercises in Year 2 onwards.
- Using the table of recommended thematic courses, register for the relevant courses. Please note of pre-requisites for language-related courses. See here for more details.
Frequently Asked Questions- Can I take the thematic courses or other immersive courses such as CDO303xx Impact Start Up Challenge in my earlier semesters before carrying out the Overseas Work Attachment(OWA)? Yes, you may take them up as free electives. However, you would need to ensure that you have secured an OWA before you can declare the minor for MNACI and to retag the courses taken under this minor. It is preferable that you secure your OWA placement, declare MNACI as minor and register the courses under this minor.
- Do I need to complete the OWA before being able to declare the minor? You need not complete the OWA before being able to declare the minor. You may carry out your minor declaration once you have received a confirmed offer for your Overseas Work Attachment. Please contact your CDO career mentor or [email protected] for more information.
