Overcoming Obstacles: A SUSS Graduate's Triumph

My SUSS journey began in 2021, during the height of the Covid pandemic. Working in the aviation sector was especially challenging then, but I saw a silver lining—it was the perfect opportunity to upskill myself. After earning a diploma in Engineering Informatics from Ngee Ann Polytechnic in 2004, I had spent years in customer service, far removed from IT. Returning to school felt both exhilarating and daunting, as I found myself stepping into a virtual classroom, navigating unfamiliar concepts and systems.

At 38 years old, I was the oldest in my group and likely one of the oldest in my entire course, surrounded by peers in their twenties and early thirties. While most took two to three modules each semester, I opted for five to six because my goal was to graduate as quickly as possible.

Despite the heavy study load, I managed to maintain a GPA of 4.23 and received a commendation award for Best Digital Animation in MTD201 – Fundamentals of Graphics Design, during the 2023 January Semester. This experience highlighted the importance of broadening my knowledge. Coming from the aviation and service industry, I was now equipped with a fresh set of skills.

SUSS, with its focus on working adults and lifelong learning, proved to be the perfect environment to hone my skillsets.

The lecturers understood our commitments, tailored classes to accommodate our schedules and never hesitated to offer personalised guidance.

Despite the challenges of balancing my job which requires me to travel frequently, and raising two young children along with a newborn, I pressed on. My wife’s unwavering support made all the difference.

Beyond academics, my time at SUSS expanded my network beyond the aviation industry, reinforcing the need to stay relevant by continuously upgrading my skills.

Today, at 41 years old, I have graduated, and my wife is following her own dream by pursuing a degree at SUSS. However, my journey does not end here. I plan to continue upgrading myself with a master’s degree to further advance my career and keep pushing the boundaries of what I can achieve.
