Synopsis

COU513 Counselling Special Populations aims to increase the ability of students to appraise the emerging concepts and in applying relevant methods to work with one special population with diverse needs, including but not limited to individuals, couples and families in the LBGTQ community, or those who experience disability, or economic disadvantage. The HoP will inform students in advance about the selected specific population. In 2025, this course focuses on the counselling needs of LBGTQ community.

Learning Outcome

  • Critique emerging theories and methods pertaining to a special population (e.g., LGBTQ or Disabilities or Economically Disadvantaged etc.)
  • Evaluate the adequacy of policies and procedures, community resources and counselling services for the specific special population.
  • Appraise existing local services in addressing the social/emotional needs and services for clients from the special and diverse populations.
  • Construct effective and contextually relevant treatment approaches to counselling the special and diverse populations.
  • Assess relevant and diverse issues related to the special population in local context.
  • Recommend intervention strategies in working with the special populations.
