Synopsis

More than half of the films and television shows made worldwide are adaptations of other works such as novels, comic books, journalistic essays, and video games. FLM358 Film Adaptation introduces students to the process of adapting an existing source material into a film. Students will gain an overview of the commercial reasons for adaptation. They will look at ways to find and evaluate source material and learn what is involved in acquiring the rights to the source material. Students will also explore the trajectory of adaptation—from faithful to inventive—and the impact of socio-cultural and political factors. Students will examine case studies involving different source materials and get the opportunity to propose a work that they believe would make a good adaptation.
