Synopsis

Pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and sloth – the 7 Deadly Sins – reflect the tumultuousness of the human condition since time immemorial. This course delves deeper into each of these notoriously ‘dark’ emotions, equipping students with knowledge of the neurosciences underpinning them, which would form a foundation for further endeavours in the interdisciplinary field of social neuroscience. Students will learn about cutting-edge neuroimaging research such as functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), functional Near-infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) and Electroencephalogram (EEG) that reveals brain activities which occur when these emotions surface in our daily lives. From the formulation of neuroimaging experiments to the eventual application of these findings, students will embark on an exciting course that will imbue them with a newfound appreciation of human emotions from a neurobiological perspective. Bridging the gap between age-old inquiries into human nature and modern neuroscientific methodologies, this course will offer students a unique opportunity to explore the depths of human emotions while preparing them for impactful careers at the intersection of neuroscience and psychology.
