Synopsis

Safeguarding and protecting vulnerable clients are a serious and complex area of social work practice. Demonstrating an understanding of legislation, policies, theories and skills for practice is crucial for social workers. This course provides a comprehensive framework for students to develop their knowledge and skills in safeguarding and protection. It brings together theories, legislation, ethics, policy and research relating to safeguarding and protection. Students will gain knowledge on both the theories and skills required for the protection of children and vulnerable adults. Concepts of safety, family preservation, reunification, risk and needs assessment, strength management and ethics will be discussed. Students will learn about the complexities of safeguarding work, ways to deal with disclosure and reporting of abuse, the management of allegation of abuse and services available. The content will include challenges faced, practical skills in risk and needs assessment, importance of good recording, and working with stakeholders/partners on appropriate responses to safeguarding and protection of different populations. The course will conclude by discussing emerging issues in safeguarding work and the need for stronger synergies across stakeholders.
