Synopsis

This course delves into the complexities of crime, deviance, and rehabilitation within the context of social work and criminal justice systems. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of various theories of crime and deviance, exploring their relevance to contemporary issues. They will analyse key concepts related to crime, justice, punishment, and rehabilitation, equipping them to critically examine the rehabilitation needs of offenders. Key skills emphasized include assessing the risks associated with offenders and devising suitable rehabilitation interventions. Through topics ranging from youth justice and juvenile rehabilitation to adult offender rehabilitation and community re-integration approaches, students will explore diverse strategies for promoting rehabilitation and reducing recidivism. This course prepares students to play vital roles in addressing societal challenges related to crime and deviance, fostering their ability to advocate for effective rehabilitation practices in Singapore's criminal justice system.
