'I learnt that every small effort, however insignificant it might seem, can contribute towards making a huge difference to improve the lives of many in our community'

SUSS places an emphasis on transforming society through applied social sciences, which is something that I am deeply passionate about. I decided to pursue a Bachelor in Social Work with SUSS, as I enjoy interacting with the community and hope to enhance the lives and well-being of individuals in need.

While I participated in a number of programmes in SUSS, the STEP Sociovation Forum in 2019 left the deepest impression on me. I was inspired by the innovative ideas delivered by fellow participants; the experienced helped developed my awareness, and enhanced my knowledge of social issues and needs. I was privileged to be given the opportunity to be involved as the President of the organizing committee, comprising of 11 members, and was even more grateful to have been awarded the SUSS Spirit Award in 2020 for leading the committee.

My Overseas Experiential Learning Trip to Taiwan in 2018 also was a life-changing experience for me as well. It provided me with a platform to investigate the world beyond my immediate environment – Singapore. With the trip specially curated for Social Work students, I was able to visit social service organisations, where we were introduced to efforts put in place to support various needs. I was inspired by the dedication and conscientiousness of social workers in Taiwan.

Joining the 2021 Class Giving Committee, I was in charge of publicity and social media marketing campaigns. While it was unfortunate that COVID-19 prevented the team from meeting as often as we’d like, with the great camaraderie, we managed to surpass our goal of raising $10,000!

I think the spirit of giving is extremely important in the community, especially in the education sector, where education is a great equaliser which can help uplift those in need. I learnt that every small effort, however insignificant it might seem, can contribute towards making a huge difference to improve the lives of many in our community. Participating in Class Giving 2021, and joining the AAAC, I want to instil the culture of giving, and to leave a meaningful legacy in SUSS.
