Global partnerships have multiple purposes including improving global equity in access to services and support for persons with disability. Global partnerships between stakeholders from high-, low- and middle income countries, should carefully consider how services or support for persons with disability could best be provided. In addition, it is also important to consider the principles of equity of participation within global research partnerships. In my presentation, some of the research conducted between South Africa and Sweden as well as South Africa and India will be reported and reflected upon. In addition, the principles underlying these research partnerships as well as some insights gained from these exchanges will be explored.
Why is the topic of participation important to you?
The opportunity to participate in many social and community activities were often restricted during my childhood growing up in apartheid South Africa. I have reflected on the implications of this and also on our understanding of participation from various diverse cultural and contextual perspectives. For me it is important that these nuances are included when we research participation. I enjoy participating in discussions around research and how research can be translated into meaningful change in peoples lives. A participatory framework for research is important to ensure sustainable and meaningful research on participation
