In the late 1980s, Xinyao-era singers and songwriters of Singapore ventured abroad to break into the mainstream Chinese popular music scene. Today, artists from Singapore, China, and Taiwan are contributing to the development of Mandopop with their music, lyrics, and vocals. What are their distinctive features? What are the major trends and who are the trendsetters? Mickey Huang (Taiwan), Billy Koh (based in China), and Peter Lee Shih Shiong (Singapore) will give you an insider’s view.
