SUSS-SmartMesh Workshops cum Blockchain Challenge 2020

SUSS-SmartMesh Workshops cum Blockchain Challenge 2020

Registration Closed

(This event is currently planned as virtual seminars.)

About

Mark Zuckerberg created a killer app called Facebook for the internet that has been dominated by centralised servers. Can you design a killer app for a decentralised internet in the upcoming Blockchain era?

In this Challenge, you are to form a team of not more than 3 members to

  1. IDENTIFY A PROBLEM concerning a community that you belong to or are aware of
  2. PROPOSE A SOLUTION that will have a positive impact on the community
  3. DESIGN a prototype smartphone app that solves the problem you identify

Your design must adhere to the following constraints:

  • the themes of 'Head, Heart, Habit' (3H) must feature prominently in your work*
  •  the app must be designed with the goal that it will be eventually implemented on the SmartMesh HyperMesh Architecture**

Online workshops will be conducted to provide participants with more insight into the challenge. This includes an introduction to blockchain technology and the SmartMesh HyperMesh Architecture. Mentors will guide participants to frame their work in subsequent lab sessions. Attendance at all workshops is highly recommended to reap the full benefits. If it is necessary to miss a few workshops, we will provide online recordings with self-assessments. Attendance on Day 1 of workshop is compulsory.

Submission guidelines will be shared during the workshop. All submissions must be sent to bcchallenge@suss.edu.sg.

Shortlisted groups will deliver a presentation of their work to a judging panel of academic and industry experts on 22 August 2020.

* 'Head, Heart, Habit' (3H) is a core SUSS philosophy
** SmartMesh HyperMesh Architecture consists of the Spectrum Blockchain, Photon Payment Network, MeshBox Computing and Wireless Router Hardware, Internet of Things, and various inclusive applications. See www.smartmesh.io and www.meshbox.io for more details.

Background

SmartMesh Foundation promotes an ecosystem that aims to bridge the growing divide and to promote inclusivity.

There are approximately 4 billion people without internet access, 2 billion people who are unbanked and 1 billion people without access to electricity.

SmartMesh Foundation works with ecosystem partners to address such inequities by enabling the HyperMesh Infrastructure, aiming to provide inclusive connectivity, banking and energy to the world.

SmartMesh Foundation has optimized the integration of MeshBox hardware (edge computing node and Wifi mesh router) and blockchain technology into a platform on which ecosystem partners build disruptive new applications such as blockchain-based Social Banking, Transactive Renewable Energy, IoT and decentralized open systems.

SmartMesh and SUSS have jointly initiated the SUNSHINE Blockchain Living Labs for the SUSS community to learn about and to develop future blockchain-enabled applications.

This Challenge is the first phase of the SUNSHINE deployment, which will eventually lead to commercialization of emergent ideas from students and researchers.
