Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) will be hosting the 7th Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning (7th APRCSL) from 19-21 June 2019. About 300 Singapore and international representatives from various education institutes, NGOs and welfare organisations will speak and exchange their knowledge of best practices in service-learning as a lifelong journey to build up a ‘service-minded’ community within Asia-Pacific and the rest of the world. This is the first time the regional conference is held in Singapore.
A recent survey conducted by SUSS and Straits Times found a high 42% of over one thousand 19-year-old Singaporeans wanting jobs with meaning. This is indicative that millennials increasingly desire greater sense of purpose in their lives and work. Service-learning can provide a platform for our next generation to discover what they love, what they can make a living of, what the world needs, and what they are good at.
The conference will reinforce what SUSS have adopted as our education philosophy – to influence and empower our youths to actively develop and act on their sense of social responsibility given the social and environmental challenges ahead. In both academic and co- curricular applications, Service-learning plays a critical role in tertiary institutions in educating and engaging our youths to develop the knowledge and skills (Head), attitudes and dispositions (Heart) to make life choices that are socially responsible (Habit), in their journey of growth to become leaders in society.
The Conference is a flagship event of Service-Learning Asia Network (SLAN), of which SUSS Office of Service-Learning and Community Engagement (OSLCE) serves as the current Secretariat. The purpose of SLAN is to promote the common interests and networks of student exchanges, faculty research, as well as curriculum development and programme evaluation among colleges and universities interested in Service-learning in Asia.
