2020 Singapore Chinese Film Festival

The 8th Singapore Chinese Film Festival (SCFF2020), co-organised by the Centre for Chinese Studies@SUSS (CCS) and Singapore Film Society (SFS), was held from 2 to 11 Oct 2020.

To adapt to the new normal this year, the organisers adopted a hybrid online-physical model, holding physical screenings while making some titles available online.

The 33 films selected for SCFF2020 are divided into five categories: Chinese Panorama, Documentary Vision, Chinese Shorts Showcase, (Non) Chinese Language Cinema and Amoy Dialect Classics. The opening film is Changfeng Town, directed by Chinese director Wang Jing and co-produced by Singaporean filmmaker Tay Bee Pin. The closing film is the much anticipated Hong Kong movie Suk Suk, which is a poignant romance between two men in their twilight years.

Amoy Dialect Classics is a segment that comprises three Amoy-dialect films starring Xiao Juan (Ling Po) and Xiao Fang (Zhuang Xue Fang) selected by Yeo Ming Hui, our guest curator who is a local film researcher. These three films were made available to watch for free online by the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute from 3 to 9 Oct.

As filmmakers were unable to meet moviegoers in person this year, the majority of post-screening Q&A sessions were conducted online and broadcast live on Facebook and YouTube. The Q&A session of Beyond the Dream, which garnered about 3,700 views, had fans interacting with Terrance Lau and Cecilia Choi, who play the main characters in the movie.

Sponsors of SCFF2020 include the Chinese Language & Culture Fund, Hong Leong Foundation, and Taipei Representative Office in Singapore. Filmgarde Cineplexes and KinoLounge by Shaw Theatres are the venue partner and the virtual screening partner respectively. It is worth noting that Valerie Lei and Cheryl Pek, two SUSS students who took the Singapore Chinese Film Festival internship course, assisted in the social media management of the film festival.
