To celebrate the end of another academic mentoring year, SUSS students who are part of the Share, Grow, Excel (S.G.E.) Association organised two events during the December school holidays to meaningfully engage the mentees under their care.
S.G.E Association is one of the many Community Service-Learning (CSL) student groups in SUSS. The first batch of S.G.E Association students began their partnership with New Life Student Care Centre @ Teck Whye more than four years ago and this special collaboration has continued until today, with a key focus area in year-long academic mentoring for children aged 7 to 12 years old from the student care centre.
Starting off on the home ground, S.G.E Association planned for a SUSS Campus Tour, which gave the children from New Life Student Care Centre the opportunity to visit the SUSS campus and explore the university.

Alvin Yang, a student from SUSS' Bachelor of Public Safety and Security degree programme and member of the S.G.E Association explained, “The aim of the SUSS Campus Tour was to expose the children to different learning environments and hopefully inspire them to strive for higher education to expand their future opportunities.”

He was delighted to witness the children flushed with excitement for the tour and the station games that the team had planned around the campus. The activities enabled the student mentors to create special bonds with the children while providing them insights into what it is like to be a student at SUSS.

The second event brought the children on a learning journey to the Science Centre Singapore (SCS). Through the interactive exhibits and attractions, the children were exposed to the concepts of science and technology in a fun and fresh way.
Ms Law Qi Jia, a teacher mentor at New Life Student Care Centre, shared that the children eagerly anticipated the trip to SCS as there was much for them to explore and apply relevant topics like kinetic energy and the human body to what they have learnt in school. S.G.E Association hopes that the learning journey to SCS would further inspire the children and spark their interest in science and technology.

Ms Law also expressed that water fun is a must-have during the school holidays and that the children had immensely enjoyed their last learning journey stop at Waterworks, a fun-filled water playground in SCS. The attraction integrated learning about science through play and enabled the children to learn about wind speed and direction through the Water Clock Tower which is equipped with an anemometer, as well as how to measure the amount of rainfall with the rain gauge.

New Life Student Care Centre believes in providing a holistic environment for children to learn and grow in their crucial development years, and the opportunities that the S.G.E Association provide beyond classroom settings are valuable for the children to experience new and exciting ways to learn about the world around them.
With a mission to create opportunities for children to share their learning, grow, and excel through diverse experiences, the S.G.E Association looks forward to continue building relationships with New Life Student Care Centre; mentoring the next generation and witnessing the impact and growth on the children and themselves.
