A Pagoda Odyssey: SUSS Students Explore Chinese Architecture

The Cross-Cultural Immersion Interest Group (CCI-IG) recently embarked on a captivating journey through China’s rich architectural heritage at the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM)’s Pagoda Odyssey Tour. This unique experience offered a glimpse into the intricate interplay between East and West, particularly during the early 20th century, and how these cultural exchanges continue to shape our world today.

A highlight of the tour was the historic reunion of the pagodas at ACM in 2024, following their journey from the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. The handcrafted pagoda models, created by the talented Tushanwan orphans, showcased the exquisite details of various Chinese pagodas, transporting global audiences in San Francisco and Singapore to the heart of Chinese culture.

Wang Hui Si, a Year 2 Psychology student, shared her enthusiasm, “The ACM tour expanded our understanding of Chinese architecture through 84 intricate pagoda models. It was a truly enlightening experience, as our knowledgeable docent explained how these distinctive structures were influenced by regional factors, religious beliefs, and cultural exchange.”

Wee Ee Shan Anna, a Year 2 Human Resource Management student, echoed these sentiments, “The ACM Pagoda Odyssey Tour immersed us in the history of China’s different dynasties. We had the privilege of examining the pagoda pieces firsthand, learning their fascinating stories, and engaging in insightful discussions with our docent. It was an enriching and unforgettable hour.”
