In a bid to bring joy and cheer to our seniors and their caregivers on Chinese New Year, our faculty, alumni and students from SUSS Gerontology organised the Chingay Watch Party on 12 February 2022 for the second year running! This year, the team saw more local and overseas partners joining in the event.

The evening commenced with an engaging video from Singapore Contemporary artists on technology and arts, depicting multi-generational participation as a hallmark of successful ageing in our community. A festive singing rendition from students of Explorer Junior added the extra spark and zing to this joyous event. Joining the eventful line-up were Social Gifting, an SUSS startup for handicrafts and Aspire55, a startup that engages seniors in healthy ageing through exercise. They showcased various handicraft techniques and interesting workout tips. After which, a lion dance performance with the unmistakable lion head and lion dance drum by the students of Nanyang Girls’ High School (NYGH) was treated to the audience as well.

At 8pm, the Chingay event was live-streamed from Changi Jewel where the 50th anniversary special saw interactive elements, colourful costumes and mini-floats. After the Chingay event, our Gerontology alumni from Cohort 6 continued to support the People’s Association by delivering bentos to seniors residing at Whampoa.
Despite the challenges presented by the pandemic, the organising team had been able to organise and roll out these initiatives over the past two years through careful planning and coordination. They were particularly grateful to SUSS President, Professor Cheong Hee Kiat, the online event’s Guest-of-Honour, Mayor Low Yen Ling, and all the participants on the virtual zoom party.
Following the success of the past events, the organising team is committed to continue working with more partners and individuals to inspire and fuel new enthusiasm to make an impact on our community in the gerontology ecosystem!
