In the third iteration of the Outward-Bound Vietnam (OBV) Programme, 9 adventurous SUSS students embarked on an exciting 8-day journey in Ha Long, Vietnam. The Programme, designed to develop leadership, resilience, and teamwork, featured a series of outdoor activities, including hiking, abseiling, kayaking, and camp set-up, allowing participants to be humbled when they encountered the challenges imposed by nature firsthand.
The highlight of the trip was the series of hikes through breathtaking landscapes. Participants witnessed awe-inspiring views while navigating terrains different from that in Singapore. It tested their endurance as well as teamwork to cook and set camp in back-to-basic situations. The participants also explored a cave, which unique ecosystem sparked an appreciation for Vietnam’s natural environment. One participant, Presanth, reflected, “These long and arduous hikes ensured everyone communicated and contributed evenly, with many of us getting to experience new skills, like navigation along the way.”
For some, the OBV experience was about more than just outdoor activities—it was a personal journey. Esther, a final-year student, shared that she joined the programme to step out of her comfort zone, build confidence, and make the most of her final stretch in university. She noted, “The camaraderie built over time made the journey easier, even though the process was challenging and difficult. Beyond the people, being surrounded by nature was incredibly calming and healing.”
The bonding moments stood out as another key highlight. Humairah shared how the team overcame obstacles together, emphasising that the friendships and shared memories made the experience truly unforgettable. She said, “The only limit is the one you cage yourself in. Face your fears, try something new and never give up, never surrender. Keep going, you’ll never walk alone.”
Beyond the physical and mental challenges, the Programme provided invaluable leadership lessons. Participants gained insights into different leadership styles and practiced critical life skills such as adaptability, and effective communication. The students returned with a renewed sense of self, a deeper connection to nature, and friendships forged through shared experiences.
The Outward Bound Vietnam Programme remains a transformative platform for SUSS students, offering them an unparalleled opportunity to learn, grow, and connect outside the classroom. As they brought home stories of adventure and growth, they also carried forward the enduring spirit of teamwork, perseverance, and lifelong.
