Harmonies & Memories: SUSS Student Bands Light Up Orchard Road at VOMG Block Party

Orchard Road buzzed with beats and melodies during the 10th Voice Of My Generation (VOMG) Block Party outside Wisma Atria. The event, a celebration of musical diversity and talent, featured an array of performances from secondary and tertiary institution bands, including the homegrown musicians of SUSS’ Music Interest Group (MIG).

SUSS’ very own student bands, Northside Nuisance, Stain, Sunset Paradise, and Starfish Mood, took centre stage, showcasing their musical prowess to an enthusiastic crowd over two lively evenings. For some MIG members, it was their first taste of performing live, marking the debut of new and high-potential talent after a rigorous selection process.

Despite the rainy weather, the show went on, drawing in more than 100 eager revellers and supporters daily. From Indonesian hits to acapella harmonies, the performances spanned various musical genres, bringing together audiences of all tastes.

Intan Nurhidayah (Hidayah), Lead Vocalist of Northside Nuisance, also an SUSS Year 3 Communications student, reflected, “Rehearsal was hard to coordinate for our band, considering we had six members who were concurrently working, but it was heartwarming to see their dedication during our practice sessions and in their own time. Watching people sing and clap along made all the sessions worth it."

In a heartfelt testimonial, Sunset Paradise expressed gratitude for the guidance they received. MIG’s Mentorship Programme paired them with a seasoned mentor who played a pivotal role in their growth as a band since the beginning. “Kenji not only monitored our progress but also provided timely feedback. Under his direction, we were able to set our differences aside and build on our band’s chemistry.”

As the curtains closed on the VOMG Block Party, our bands left a lasting impression on both listeners and fellow performers. Musicians from SUSS and various institutions came together, forming connections that could lead to future collaborations and projects. Events like these are more than just entertainment – they are about fostering community, celebrating diversity, and nurturing talent within Singapore's music scene.
