The Youth Expedition Project (YEP) Applied Business Service-Learning (ABSL) project was a 15-day student-led overseas service-learning trip to Vientiane, Laos, that focused on the exchange and application of accountancy and financial knowledge with students of the National University of Laos (NUOL), alongside a unique opportunity to serve the disabled at Hands of Hope (HOH).
The group of 20 highly enthusiastic individuals across four majors (i.e. Finance, Accounting, Business Analytics and Marketing) are committed to making a difference in the community they serve by learning and teaching wholeheartedly.
During the five-day finance and business workshop at NUOL, the members, together with the students of NUOL, analysed and appraised the credit worthiness of Lao World, a Lao firm listed on the Lao stock exchange and allotted a credit rating to the company. Each of the members had the opportunity to lead the workshop, teach, share and guide our Lao counterparts on the essentials of credit rating. They covered areas of business strategy risk, financial policy risk, execution risk and the support of parent company and the government.
Each day ended with cultural exchange activities, where they shared Singapore’s and Lao’s history, traditions, and culture through dance, skits and handicraft.
The ABSL members spent another five days serving at HOH where they conducted lessons on general sciences and colour mixture to the children. They also learnt the art of hand sign from the HOH members!
