16 - 18 Nov 2024 – The Participation-Inclusion in Action Conference (PIAC) 2024, organised by the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) in collaboration with Healthy Trajectories of the Melbourne Children’s Campus in Australia, brought together international leaders in disability research and inclusion to address the participation rights of children and youth with disabilities. The three-day event at the Lifelong Learning Institute highlighted practical strategies for fostering inclusive environments and improving outcomes for individuals with disabilities and their families.
The conference opened with performances that celebrated resilience, advocacy, and the power of artistic expression. Pio Ramirez moved the audience with a heartfelt rendition of The Journey, Evan Lee delivered an energetic dance performance, and Valerie Thia inspired attendees with a pre-recorded speech via her AAC device.

Inclusive Ideas, Tangible Action
Madam Halimah Yacob, Chancellor of SUSS, underscored the importance of turning inclusive ideas into tangible action. She highlighted SUSS’s commitment to inclusive practices, noting initiatives like the Node for Inclusive Lifelong Education (NILE) and the university’s pilot project on inclusive hiring.
Addressing Singapore’s 2030 Enabling Masterplan, she emphasised the need for lifelong learning, independent living, and accessible environments, stating,
"Inclusion must be embedded at every stage – from policy development to infrastructure planning – to ensure that no one is left behind."
Madam Halimah also urged employers to enhance workplace accessibility and encouraged collaboration across sectors. She commended the role of caregivers, adding, "Caregivers carry a heavy burden, and it’s our shared responsibility as a community to support them."

The PIAC 2024 keynote speakers, renowned global experts in disability research, education, and rehabilitation, offered diverse insights from fields such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and special education. Hailing from leading institutions in Singapore, Canada, Australia, Finland, and South Africa, they explored themes including participation in education, co-producing equitable solutions, and fostering inclusive environments.
Highlights included Professor Christine Imms’ framework for participation strategies, Dr Eunice Tan’s pilot study on empowering youths with higher needs, and Associate Professor Dana Anaby’s environmental intervention model. Other key contributions included Professor Kenneth Poon’s advocacy for comprehensive educational engagement, Ms Nea Vänskä’s participatory research approaches, and Professor Shakila Dada’s emphasis on global partnerships for equitable support.

Family Day Showcases Inclusive Activities
On the second day of the conference, Family Day featured engaging demonstrations of innovative inclusive activities by three organisations. Art:Dis – Arts & Disability Singapore hosted a choir session that highlighted the powerful intersection of arts and advocacy for inclusivity. The Muscular Dystrophy Association of Singapore (MDAS) conducted a lively Boccia demonstration, showcasing the transformative potential of adaptive sports. PlayBuddy organised an inclusive play session, encouraging friendships and mutual understanding through interactive activities. These showcases underscored the importance of creativity and collaboration in fostering inclusive environments.
