The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in more people innovating within their homes to earn a living and caused an unprecedented boom in freelance work and the gig economy. Individuals dabbled in their own businesses and marketed their talents, with some even leaving their desk jobs after their businesses took off.

The SUSS Gig Academy saw this trend and continued to run workshops for its second year to help students explore self-employment as an alternative career by learning from various industry experts. Since its pilot launch in June 2020, the number of workshops has expanded to include topics ranging from freelancing basics to micro-influencing and digital marketing.

Bernyse Wong Xin Hui, a full-time SUSS Human Resource Management student and attendee of Gig Academy, shared that she has gained a lot from attending the workshops as in her pursuit of achieving a successful freelancer career.

Having always wanted to work as a freelance editor, Bernyse went through Meta’s workshop to understand how algorithms can be used in campaigns on Facebook to market her services. She also attended the workshop by CreativesAtWork to pick up informative tips on how to kickstart her journey as a freelancer. She learnt the different types of pricing and how to better price her services. Gig Academy aims to continue helping students pick up new skills and information from practitioners, and to guide them in attaining success and getting exposure to more gig opportunities.

A piece of advice that Bernyse has for her fellow gig workers: “Establish your unique selling point, prepare a portfolio and have testing services when you first start to get clients. While doing so, take note of budgeting, maintain good relationships and always continue to strengthen your portfolio.”
