Claudia Chu, SUSS Year 3 Accountancy student and member of SUSS Powerlifting Competition Group (CG), achieved a remarkable feat at the Reformd Powerlifting Combined Nationals 2024. Breaking the national record for ‘Under 47kg (U47)’ weight category in deadlifts, Claudia secured first place in an impressive display of strength and determination.

Her journey to qualify for the competition was not a bed of roses as powerlifters are required to attain a qualifying total through smaller competitions. Despite facing a 10-month hiatus due to a persistent lower back injury, Claudia made her triumphant return at the Masters of Strength competition organised by Strength Masters. Competing in the U47 weight category, Claudia emerged victorious, setting the stage for her success at the Combined Nationals.

In the lead up to the competition, pressure ensued as Claudia juggled between her work attachment and her trainings. In one of the last few trainings, she failed to achieve her targeted lift, “I even failed my 140kg personal record on deadlift one week before the meet due to grip issues.” However, Claudia’s resilience and commitment paid off at the Reformd Powerlifting Combined Nationals, where she exceeded expectations by lifting 148kg, setting a new national record for deadlifts.
With extreme grit and raw power, Claudia lifts her way to victory and exceeds expectations.
Claudia attributed her success to the process of tapering, mental resilience and belief in her abilities as a powerlifter. Her outstanding performance even earned her the title of ‘2nd Overall Best Female Junior Lifter’, reaffirming her status as a rising star in the powerlifting community in Singapore.
