Unveiling Japan: Highlights from Cross-Cultural Immersion Interest Group’s Japanese Cultural Event

What better way to experience the rich tapestry of Japanese culture than learning the beauty of its language and art form?

This was exactly what the Cross-Cultural Immersion Interest Group (CCI-IG) had in mind when they kicked off their first-ever Japanese Cultural Event with an immersive lineup of activities that captivated participants.

Setting the stage for the day was an engaging Japanese language lesson for over 20 who were in for an exciting treat ahead.

Jeremy Tan, SUSS' first SCCI Scholar, next presented an inspiring talk where he related vivid anecdotes from his exchange programme at Japan's esteemed Waseda University.

The excitement continued with insights from Takahiro Ishizaki, an officer from the Ibaraki Prefectural Government, who shed light on the Japanese society and working culture, providing a fascinating glimpse into the everyday life in Japan.

The event concluded with a creative Omamori charm-making workshop, where participants crafted their own traditional Japanese charms, adding a personal touch to their cultural immersion.

Ang Tze Min Mindy, SUSS Accountancy Year 2 student, reflected, “The course was brief but comprehensive and enjoyable. We even had a representative from the Japanese government who provided us with an authentic perspective on his working life in Japan! It was my first time attending such a concise lecture, and I truly enjoyed every bit of it.”

Oh Meow Jun (Cleo), SUSS Marketing Year 2 student, also shared, “The CCI-IG Japanese Cultural Appreciation Event provided an enriching opportunity to expand our understanding and perspective of Japanese culture. In addition to learning about everyday customs, we gained insights into the Japanese work culture from a native of Ibaraki. This unique and fascinating experience concluded with the craft of making Omamori amulets, adding a memorable touch to the event."

Truly an eye-opening experience, this immersive cultural event packed a fulfilling time of learning about the Japanese culture, not to mention loaded with unforgettable memories, to all the participants.
