Overview

Safety and security is a concern for all. From terror attacks to industrial espionage and politically motivated cyber-attacks, the world is experiencing multiple security threats that are complex and hard to detect and defend. Recognising these challenges, governments and businesses agree they need highly trained professionals to deliver effective security outcomes. This undergraduate degree programme aims to meet this demand and professionalize the emerging field of public safety and security.

This part-time programme provides not only theoretical knowledge but also training in intervention strategies in the area of policing, emergency management, investigation, rehabilitation, crime reduction and terrorism. The courses are designed with a balance of theory and practice, and with emphasis on the development of management, communication and critical thinking skills.

Students may pursue Public Safety and Security with a minor in Criminology, Crisis Management, Psychosocial Intervention, or Food Security and Sustainability, or Cyber Safety and Information Security.

In addition to the professional knowledge provided in this programme, SUSS offers an Integrated Pathway programme to develop interdisciplinary skills within the aviation industry. This Integrated Pathway programme, through collaboration with the Singapore Flying College (SFC), supports students in obtaining a bachelor’s degree in this programme and acquiring a Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) concurrently.

Admission Requirements

Refer to general admission criteria for undergraduate programmes.

The Public Safety and Security programme is open to Singaporeans and Permanent Residents only. PSS-MAJ1 will also consider “Other Residents in Singapore” holding valid passes wef Jul 2024 intake. This programme is unable to enrol international students.

There will be additional admission criteria to better target students who are aligned to the educational philosophy of this part-time programme. This will be done through selection interview and tests.

Programme Structure

Bachelor of Public Safety and Security
To graduate with a basic degree, students are required to complete 130 credit units (cu), which include:

  • 20 cu of SUSS Core courses
  • 80 cu of Major Compulsory courses
  • 30 cu of Minor from the list below:
    • Criminology
    • Crisis Management
    • Psychosocial Intervention
    • Food Security and Sustainability (not available for MHA Scholars)
    • Cyber Safety and Information Security

This programme is for all those who are interested in a career that focuses on the management of public safety and security. For those who are already working in related fields, the programme adopts a multi-disciplinary approach that integrate theories with practical knowledge, and it creates an opportunity for career advancements.
