Celebrating Malay Heritage with SUSS Cross-Cultural Immersion Interest Group

To deepen appreciation for Malay culture, the SUSS Cross-Cultural Immersion Interest Group (CCIIG) hosted "Gaya Raya: The Malay Culture" on 17 August 2024.

The event kicked off with a Malay Language Lesson, introducing participants to useful phrases and proverbs, setting the tone for a day rich in cultural exploration. The Malay Heritage Centre (MHC) provided an enlightening session on Malay culture and history through the lens of language, followed by an impressive Silat Pengantin performance and hands-on tutorial by the Silat Competition Group (Silat-CG). Attendees also got creative with a Peribahasa (Malay Proverb) Bookmark-making Workshop.

Brimming with the vibrancy of Malay traditions, the session offered participants an eye-opening and immersive experience, blending knowledge and cultural engagement seamlessly.

Yang Min Hui Jamie, an SUSS Social Work Year 3 Student, shared, “In the Gaya Raya event, we learnt about important proverbs in the Malay language, which we wrote out during the bookmark-making workshop. The speaker from the Malay Heritage Centre shared the interesting history of the Malay language, while the SUSS Silat group presented an enjoyable performance and guided us in trying out some basic moves. Overall, it was an exciting and insightful event!”

Kee Yu Xin Phylicia, an SUSS Marketing Year 3 Student, added, “The event was short but packed with content! The Malay Heritage Centre representative was very enthusiastic in sharing the history of the Malay language and even brought traditional puppets and cloths for us to look at. The Silat IG had a mini class to teach us a series of Silat moves which was fun.”

We look forward to future collaborations between our student interest groups and competition groups to continue celebrating the diversity of our community!
