Never Forgetting
Our Roots

SUSS giving day

In 2022, Mr Ang Yew Shen gifted $50,000 to SUSS – the largest sum donated by an alumnus in the university’s history. The gift is channelled towards the annual Ang Yew Shen Study Award. We hear from Mr Ang about giving back, and the student he has made a difference to.

“SUSS was more than an educational institution for me. I was challenged to go beyond my limits. I was a marketing undergraduate juggling a demanding naval role. I had to develop robust time management and resilience skills. This foundation has been pivotal for me to achieve breakthroughs both academically and professionally.

Today, my career has evolved. I now manage eight-figure investments and a well-known fitness franchise while pursuing a Doctorate in Business Administration.

I realised my aspiration is to enable others to unlock their full potential – just as I had been able to do so in university with the support I received. This led me to establish a study award at SUSS, which has been designed to ignite a spirit of perseverance in students.

My goal is to inspire them to fully embrace the final leg of their academic journey and equip them to thrive in their future careers or entrepreneurial pursuits.

This award has become a deeply meaningful project for me. It is a testament to my belief in the importance of remembering our roots and the value of giving back. Success is not a solo journey; it is intricately linked to the people who support us and the environments that nurture our growth.

Giving back extends beyond financial contributions; it is about fostering a culture of gratitude, support and collective success. It’s about creating an ecosystem where achievements are shared and where each contribution, big or small, is valued and celebrated.”

About the Award

The Ang Yew Shen Study Award recognises the most improved final-year business student every year. Potential recipients will be shortlisted before the start of their final academic year and the student with the most improved cumulative grade point average will receive the award at the end of their final year. The award is made possible by Mr Ang.

Finding Sources of Motivation
“There was a time when I realised my interest in my studies was waning. I decided that I needed to find sources of motivation.

The internal sources of motivation were setting small goals, where I broke my learning journey down into manageable chunks; and maintaining curiosity, where I persisted in exploring the ‘why’ and ‘how’ in every module, turning each of them into a knowledge quest.

The external source of motivation was getting shortlisted for the Ang Yew Shen Study Award. It was a turning point for me. There was now a concrete goal to work towards. I began developing a stronger sense of responsibility and focus to meet this goal that I had set my heart and mind on.

When I received the award, I felt so validated for all the effort that I had put into my studies. It also made me realise that determination does pay off.

I aspire to give back to the community by volunteering in primary schools. This is because I believe that a strong foundation in education sets an equally strong foundation for a community to thrive.”
