One Girl’s
Dream Come True

SUSS giving day

When she was a teen, Manpreet Inaya Kaur did not make the grade to enter the law programme in polytechnic. But this did not deter her from taking the longer road towards her life goal of becoming a lawyer.

“When I was in primary school, I was nominated by a teacher to do a presentation about my ambition on Career Day.

Clad in my mother’s blazer and with my hair tied up neatly in a bun, I stood on the stage and shared with the entire school that I would become a lawyer one day.

I have always been drawn to the courage of a lawyer to speak up for others.

However, I did not score well for my O Levels.

I refused to give up. As they say, change the plan but not the goal.

I took the unconventional route of enrolling in the Institute of Technical Education and chose a course that would allow me to obtain a law diploma at Temasek Polytechnic. The diploma eventually set a strong foundation that prepared me for my university studies at SUSS today.

But first, I would need to bear all of my university fees.

Hence, I felt a huge weight lifted off my shoulders when I was granted the Singapore Academy of Law Undergraduate Scholarship, which covers the fees in full. Receiving the scholarship also boosted my morale, as it allowed me to save up and support my family financially.

Right now, I have the opportunity to assist in many free legal clinics and pro bono cases through my work and internship experiences. I find my purpose in these initiatives, as I can give back to the community through my passion for legal work.”

About the Scholarship

The Singapore Academy of Law Undergraduate Scholarship aims to provide financial assistance to deserving new law students. It is made possible by the Singapore Academy of Law.

Nurturing Tomorrow’s Legal Talent
The Singapore Academy of Law (SAL), with more than 14,000 members, is a promotion and development agency for Singapore’s legal industry.

It builds up the intellectual capital of the legal profession by enhancing legal knowledge, raising the international profile of Singapore law, promoting Singapore as a centre for dispute resolution and improving the standards and efficiency of legal practice through continuing professional development and the use of technology.

SAL has set aside more than $1.4 million over five years (2022–2027) to provide scholarships to students from Singapore’s three law schools, including SUSS.

“SAL is proud to support bright students who do not have the financial means to access an education at Singapore law schools, which are among the best in Asia,” says Mr Neo. “Through these partnerships, we continue to nurture the next generation of legal talent.”
