Fostering Well-Being
in the Elderly

SUSS giving day

SUSS and Nunchi Marine have launched the Age Well Programme to promote studies on holistic and healthy ageing in Singapore. Find out more about the impact of the inaugural programme!

About the Programme

The SUSS-Nunchi Marine Age Well Programme, kick-started in 2023, encourages collaborations among organisations to promote cross-learning and applied ageing among the gerontology community, in line with the SUSS Minor in Applied Ageing Studies. The programme is funded by a $1 million pledge made by Nunchi Marine in 2022.

Nunchi Marine is a Singapore-based oil cargo and bunker trading company. We speak with Mr Song, Chief Executive Officer of Nunchi Marine, about the organisation’s interest in gerontology.

Q: Why has Nunchi Marine decided to contribute to gerontology, which is the study of ageing?

Mr Song: First and foremost, we recognise the growing demographic shift towards an ageing population in Singapore. The challenges and opportunities associated with an ageing society align with our company’s long-term vision and commitment to addressing pressing societal issues.

Furthermore, our decision is rooted in one of Nunchi Marine’s core values: social responsibility. As a corporate entity, we have a role to play in addressing the evolving needs of our society. Gerontology represents an area where advancements can significantly improve the health, independence and overall satisfaction of the senior citizen community.

Q: What do you think is the role of the elderly in our community, and why should we never forget them?

Mr Song: Seniors are repositories of wisdom, experience and historical knowledge. We must recognise and celebrate the valuable contributions that they have made throughout their lives, whether these efforts are in the cultural, social or economic sphere of our society.

Their wisdom is invaluable in guiding younger generations and shaping the cultural identity of a community. Additionally, seniors often play key roles in family structures, providing support, care and a sense of continuity.

That is why we must never forget our seniors: they bring so much value to us. Respecting the elderly is not only a reflection of a compassionate and inclusive society, but also an investment in the well-being of current and future generations.

Q: What are Nunchi Marine’s hopes for senior citizens?

Mr Song: Nunchi Marine hopes to enhance the quality of life and promote social inclusion for seniors worldwide. This could involve developing technologies, programmes or services that address their unique needs and challenges. We are fully in support of programmes that facilitate community engagement, intergenerational activities and support networks that boost well-being in seniors.

We also hope to empower seniors by fostering independence and preserving their dignity. This could include initiatives that support ageing in place, provide accessible healthcare and create environments to accommodate the diverse needs of older individuals.
